Cliff Matthews extends his consecutive

win streak to three in Hurst

The Texas Putting Tour continued its weekend events at the Hurst, Texas course. This has been traditionally one of the easiest layouts on the Texas Tour. Nobody plays it regularly but the winning score is usually around the 75 mark. This continued to be the case as the whole field was between 25 and 31 after the first round. Cliff Matthews held the lead by himself with Keith Barfield alone in second one stroke back. Another 25 by Cliff in the second round kept him in the lead but a nice 12 under from Wade Sahmel moved him alone into second place. No other player was within 4 strokes of the lead. Cliff and Wade shot matching 6 under 12’s on the front eliminating the rest of the field from contention. Cliff fired a solid 5 under 13 on the back to finish at 30 under 75 and Wade was not able to close out his round missing the last five holes to finish 4 back of Cliff. The win was Cliff’s third in three tries on the Texas Tour this year. State Spots went to Cliff Matthews, Kenny Beck, who finished alone in third, and Keith Barfield who finished tied for fourth with Jeffrey Smith and Lee Messinger.

The opening round would set the stage for the rest of the tournament. Adam Sahmel, Mike Huckaby and Dave Blalock all shot eight under 28’s to hold the opening round lead with Rob Martin one stroke back. Both Dave and Adam matched their first round scores to keep the lead but Mike fell three strokes off the pace and Rob Martin shot a second consecutive 29 to sit two behind the leaders. As the last round came to a close a three man battle ensued. Mike Huckaby fired a 5 under front nine to get back in the game and as the players came to the last three holes Adam and Dave were tied with Mike one stroke back. Adam and Mike both made the 16th hole but Dave missed leaving Adam one ahead of both players. All three made the 17th and the tournament came down to the last hole. Adam, putting first, hit a good line but put a little too much pace on his shot. The double kicked out of the hole and back down the hill. Missing his deuce left the door open for either Dave or Mike to take the win with an ace. Dave putted next and lagged the hill; he also missed his deuce putt and finished one back. Mike just missed his ace putt but stayed on top of the hill and made the easy deuce setting up a playoff the for the win between him and Adam. The long hot day took it’s toll on Adam and he fell behind early. A bogey by Adam combined with an ace by Mike on the ninth hole gave Mike a five stroke lead with nine holes to go. It looked like and easy win for Mike but as the last nine holes moved along Adam crept closer and closer finally getting to within two strokes on the 16th hole. Adam had made the 17th hole in the second and third rounds but pushed his ball slightly and missed to the right in the playoff. Mike stepped up and made the 17th center hole to seal the win. A safe lay-up by Mike and an ace by Adam on the 18th hole made the final margin two-strokes. Both players, along the Dave Blalock earned state spots.
